Ogin-Sama

A film of battlefields: the acts of war at the beginning of the film soon lead to the no less dramatic lines of conflict in the life of the young, deeply devout Christian Ogin, daughter of a famous tea master. Her earthly passion is directed towards the married and no less devout samurai Ukon, who rejects her love, however. Her subsequent arranged marriage with another man coincides with the period in the 16^th century when Christians suffered persecution, which also comes to affect Ogin. Once again, Tanaka shines a light on the yearnings and desires of her protagonist in strikingly candid fashion. Ineko Amira plays the title role, who set up a production company with her acting colleagues Yoshiko Kuga and Keiko Kishi called Ninjin Club, which produced Tanaka’s final directorial work. (mg)
